Lore & Background

Satan was originally an angel cast out of Heaven. After his fall, he discovered demons living on Earth. God destroyed both Satan's body and the demons in response to their savagery and violence, but their souls endured. Reincarnating as Ryo Asuka, Satan orchestrated the merging of the demon Amon with Akira Fudo to create a Devilman, intending for Akira to survive the coming purge. He explains that he deems demons' capabilities and simpler nature superior to the more complicated and weaker humans. During the final battle, Satan reveals his true nature to Akira, but Akira refuses to join his cause. After humanity, demons, and Devilmen are obliterated, Satan realizes he has killed the only person he ever loved and becomes overwhelmed with grief, tearfully cradling Akira's lifeless body as angels descend to destroy and reform the Earth into a new world with two moons.

In Their Own Story

Satan's plan unfolds across the series, beginning with Ryo Asuka taking Akira to the Sabbath Party to expose demons. He later publicly exposes Akira's identity as Devilman on national television, triggering global chaos, mass violence, and genocide. After Akira's friends are murdered by a paranoid mob, Akira confronts Ryo, who reveals he is Satan. Satan explains he intends to exterminate humanity to reclaim it for demons, having orchestrated Akira's transformation so he could survive. Akira refuses to join Satan and gathers other Devilmen to fight, but is defeated. With all life obliterated, Satan cradles Akira's dead body, grieving as angels descend to reform the world.

Reader's Guide

Satan's identity is revealed only at the end of the series, when Akira confronts Ryo after the death of Miki and her friends. Reincarnated as Ryo, he orchestrated events to merge Amon with Akira, creating a Devilman. He intended to exterminate humanity, deeming demons superior. Akira refuses to join Satan's cause, leading to a final battle where Akira and the Devilmen are defeated. After humanity and demons are obliterated, Satan grieves over Akira's body as angels descend to destroy and reform Earth into a new world with two moons.
